What the research says:
In our 2025-2026 research study, we heard that women and non-binary leaders are carrying extraordinary responsibility—and working in systems that weren’t designed for them to succeed.
Other studies have shown that women hold just 34.7% of leadership roles in the U.S. despite representing nearly half the workforce. For every 100 men promoted to manager, only 81 women advance, creating compounding pressure at the top.
Senior women leaders report higher burnout, greater scrutiny, and fewer sponsorship opportunities, with nonprofit and mission‑driven leaders especially at risk—95% of nonprofit leaders report burnout concerns, and one‑third are very concerned about their own sustainability.
